Critical Analysis of John Mayer Lyrics

John Mayer is a beautiful lyricist and not a sore sight to look at either. Reading my prior posts, you can say I’m a little obsessed with this talented beauty. Listening to “Daughters” I was inspired to analyze this song for fun. First off, this song isn’t about his daughter (she might be somewhere out there in the world with one of his baby mamas) but someone else’s daughter, specifically a woman he is very fond of.

I know a girl

She puts the color inside of my world, but she’s just like a maze

Where all of the walls all continually change

And I’ve done all I can to stand on her steps with my heart in my hands

Now I’m starting to see, maybe it’s got noting to do with me.

Ok, so. He knows this girl who is actually really amazing seeing how she puts vivid color into his world of dullness. She’s really confusing and quite a challenge and can never make up her damn mind, but what irresistible woman that everyone wants isn’t? He has tried everything he can do to get this one girl to love him endlessly until the end of time, literally about to give his heart to her (well.. hopefully NOT literally because a dead John Mayer would not make me happy). He’s finally starting to realize, “HEY JOHN! YOU’RE NOT THE PROBLEM HERE! This girl is just fucked up emotionally to love anything. It could be because of a bad previous relationship or maybe she’s really scared to open herself up. WHO KNOWS.”

Fathers be good to your daughters, and daughters will love like you do.

Girls become lovers, who turn into mothers, so mothers be good to your daughters too.

The love a woman learns is from her father. If fathers are good to their daughters, then daughters will love like their fathers love them. UGH, but then that teenage stage happens and the young, innocent daughter you once knew turns into a rebellious lover who then turns into a mother! But she still loves like her father, and it is her duty to pass this love onto her child.

Oh, you see that skin? It’s the same she’s been standing in.

Since the day she saw him walking away now she’s left cleaning up the mess he made.

Skin. So beautiful if you wash it everyday. John Mayer is standing afar admiring this woman’s skin. How poetic. She’s been in the same skin through-out her life (check with science on this one John. I think skin regenerates itself every 27 days). It is not clear who “him” and “he” are, but I am guessing it is this daughter’s father who never got to show her the love she is supposed to know and is the reason why she is fucked up emotionally. THANKS A LOT DAD.

So fathers be good to your daughters, and daughters will love like you do.

Girls become lovers, who turn into mothers, so mothers be good to your daughters too.

Refer back to the previous chorus.

Boys you can break. You’ll find out how much they can take.

Boys will be strong, and boys soldier on, but boys would be nothing without the warmth

from a woman’s good, good heart.

This love a woman generates is the best kind of love. It’s warm and without it a boy would never become a man. It is your job, boys, to determine how much a woman can take, but you have to be strong! BE the soldier. Toughen up, even if we are PMSing monsters throwing heavy objects at you. At the end of the day, the woman’s love leads you back to bed.

On behalf of every man looking out for every girl.

You are the god and the weight of her world.

John knows. He takes things into a woman’s perspective now, looking at the man who deals with her hair in the shower drain and panties in the laundry. Men, if you know how to look after your girl you are the god and weight of our world.
Ugh, so beautiful..
